JOB SUMMARY:          

​

The incumbent will be responsible for the performance of EMG studies on referred patients and for the administrative functions associated with operation of the EMG Lab. The technologist also performs the financial, human resource, statistical compilation and supplies inventory control necessary for day to day lab operation.  The technologist will work under the leadership of a neurologist in multi-disciplinary, hospital based outpatient and inpatient clinic environment with emphasis on continuing education.  The candidate will prepare recordings and reports for interpretation by neurologists and will work under the leadership of neurologist or physiatrist.  Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:       

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology or related biological science.

  • Graduation with Diploma of Technology in one year directly related experience and certification with the Canadian Board of Registration of E.M.G technologists or equivalent combination of education training and experience

  • Understanding of neuromuscular anatomy and physiology, electrophysiological equipment and electronic principles.

  • Literacy with computers utilized as a component of the diagnostics equipment in the laboratory.

  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically both verbally and/or written with all members of the health care team, the patient and his/her family.

  • BRETC registration required

  • Dual Registration (BRETC and CBRET) an asset

  • Experience with evoked potential testing an asset

  • Must have initiative and good judgment

  • A preference of 2 years of active experience performing EMG and Nerve Conduction studies with knowledge of neuromuscular disorders and electrophysiology

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support provider as certified by the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • Good attendance record

Job Summary
The successful applicant will be involved with the provision of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary service, whereby the operation and maintenance of various neuroelectrophysiology equipment is done independently for the purpose of obtaining various diagnostic neuro-physiological results from patients who have been referred from the various disciplines. The technologist will oversee the day-to-day activities of lower level technologists and DNP students and will provide instruction, evaluations and supervision to DNP students. The technologist will also participate in the establishment of protocol and procedures, normal baselines, policies, equipment parameters, recording techniques, and filing systems for DNP department and will provide orientation and demonstrate equipment and procedures to hospital personnel. The candidate will also assist in determining feasibility of new techniques and new equipment. The candidate will be required to work with considerable independence in cooperation with fellow technologists. This position reports to Division Manager, Medicine Program.

Job Demands
Occasionally lifts objects over 10 lbs. and moves objects over 50 lbs. in the form of portable equipment in the transfer or lifting of patients.
Regularly required to sit to operate equipment, interview patients and write reports with the constant need for fine motor skills.
Visual concentration is required for proper data acquisition and troubleshooting.
Eye/hand coordination is required on a regular basis.
Exact results and precision are required on a regular basis.

Job Qualifications
Successful completion of a recognized training program in Electroneurophysiology, supplemented by experience in the operation of electroneurophysiological equipment is required.
Experience and/or training in evoked potential studies or electromyography/nerve conduction studies, or, experience at the Technologist I level, is required.
Registration or eligibility for registration with the Canadian Board of Registered Electroneurophysiology Technologists (CBRET) is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required

POSITION SUMMARY

EEG Services provides comprehensive patient-centered care and contributes to the understanding of epilepsy through diagnostic investigation and education. Reporting to the Manager, CNS Ambulatory Care & The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, the Certified EEG Technician is responsible for performing quality electroencephalograms for the adult and pediatric population in the inpatient and ambulatory care areas. Other responsibilities may include but are not limit to, 24-hour monitoring in the 11-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, including video monitoring; monitoring the 2 Paediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (PEMU) admissions, 24-hour monitoring of patients with surgically implanted (invasive) subdural/or grid electrodes; assisting the physician with cortical stimulation with invasive subdural and/or grid electrodes, performing routine and prolonged EEGs and working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.


• Post-Secondary undergraduate degree in health sciences
• Certification by the Canadian Board of Registered EEG Technologist (CBRET)

EEG Services
OPSEU UH TECHNICAL 

 

In addition to the duties required of a Certified EEG Technician, the Senior EEG Technician will be a channel of communication among the CNS Leadership, Technicians and Physicians. The Senior EEG Technician will be responsible for the orientation and training for new EEG Technicians as well as coordinating daily workload, providing technical guidance and supervision to assigned staff. The Senior EEG Technician will be responsible for assuring the efficient and effective operation of the EEG Laboratories at UH & VH and for ensuring the quality standards for technical equipment is maintained at all time.


• Certification by the Canadian Board of Registered EEG Technologist (CBRET)

• Membership with Canadian Association of Electroneurophysiology Technologist (CAET) preferred

• Current Basic Life Support BLS-HCP preferred

• Minimum three (3) years of related experience conducting inpatient and outpatient electroencephalograms (EEGs)

• Demonstrated leadership, teaching, coaching, mentorship and familiarity with principles of change

• Proficient Adult and Pediatric EEG Knowledge

• Advanced patient assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation skills

• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
